This is an extremely rare creel made by the George Lawrence Co., Portland, Or., because it bears the metal cartouche fastened on the front face of this creel for the "Spalding & Bros" Sporting Chain founded in 1876! In the 40+ years of collecting these wonderful creels this is only the second Lawrence No. 3 DL Hazeldell with the round Spalding metal cartouche mounted permately on this basket we have ever seen! This split willow creel is the tougher small size basket measuring approximately 14" across it's bottom by 7" deep (front to back) by 9 1/2" high at it's back side. The "3 DL" stamp on the top designates it as a Hazelldell "Low Boy"model creel designed to hold 20 lbs. of fish. Note the "finger" loop hanger instead of the full carry handle...this was unquestionably done on the Hazeldell model creel only. The Spalding metal cartouche is their Trade Mark designed Baseball measuring approximately 3/4" in diameter and is riveted to the front below the closing strap & buckle. It replaced the George Lawrence metal cartouche which furthered Spalding's attempt to create a product that was exclusive to them, however in reality it was still a Lawrence catagued product. You can see and read about the "Hazeldell" creel on page 58 in the "Art of The Creel" book. There was no harness found with this creel which was an after market purchase. A wonderful addition to display proudly in any creel or angling collection!
